We saw the Marvel blockbuster, Guardians of the Galaxy, while we were on our recent Delta charter flight from Washington DC to Florida (on my stepson’s Children’s Miracle Network Ambassador trip), so we’ve been eagerly awaiting the DVD release ever since (it’ll be out tomorrow, 12/9/2014, at Walmart).
Features not to be missed:
- From 12/7 – 12/13, when you buy one of these Disney Infinity 2.0 figures, the cashier should be prompted to give a $5 Walmart gift card instantly.
- Take a look at the in-store stackable display for Guardians of the Galaxy DVD, at Walmart.
- Check out the exclusive Character O-sleeve and exclusive music zinepack and a 64-page magazine–with cast and crew interviews, exclusive behind-the-scenes photos and trivia PLUS a custom “cassette” laptop decal–at Walmart.
Of course, Gavie loves Rocket Raccoon (it must be something about the fearless tenacity of that little warrior-furball). Because we’ve already been spending a lot of time talking about the Guardians of the Galaxy, we decided to prepare for the upcoming DVD release–with these fun, food-and-craft activities. It’s everything you need for a family movie night!
1. Groot Cookies.
Making cookies is a great holiday activity, and the release off Guardians off the Galaxy makes this the perfect time to create character-themed cookies!

Beyond the edible tie-in with the movie, the Groot cookies are just a lot of fun to make. Gavie offered a running commentary on what “great battles” Groot and Rocket Raccoon were having, with all the “bad guys”! We were all covered in flour and sugar, apparently making us all “invisible and indestructible”…
2) Annual Ornament Additions: Guardians.
We also added to one of our favorite holiday traditions with Guardians of the Galaxy action figures. We just added ornament hangers, and put them on the tree.
3) Model Guardians.
The boys love to make figures in Play-Doh and clay, so this was the perfect opportunity for them to form their own versions of Groot, Rocket Raccoon and the other Guardians of the Galaxy characters.
4) Snuggle-Up Blanket/Throw.
There are lots of opportunities to snuggle in and enjoy a cup of hot chocolate, popcorn and a movie; and the Guardians of the Galaxy blanket makes our family movie night perfect!
5) Timely Reminders.
While we all get ready to watch the new release of Guardians of the Galaxy, you can check out the new watch. It’s a great way to start your countdown, or schedule your family movie night (the kids will love the countdown to the home-movie showing!)

It’s in moments like these that I love being a parent, watching him enjoy an iconic movie, and then reliving the experience: battling all the bad guys, saving the day (it’s also a great reminder of similar moments from my childhood). Movies like Guardians of the Galaxy allow us to live/relive these moments with our children…
This one (in particular) is now holiday traditions… We’ve love to hear/read about your favorite holiday memories. Plus, be sure to pick up the new Guardians of the Galaxy movie!
When you buy Groot, Drax or Rocket Raccoon figures, the cashier should be alerted to give you a $5 Walmart gift card and you should get it instantly.
